On the basis of a positive appraisal of the 2006-2009 results and the conclusions of the economic study of health biotechnology and medical technology in Wallonia, BioWin has determined its strategic and operational ambitions in line with the Marshall Plan 2. Green.
In the framework of the Marshall Plan 2.Green, BioWin will continue to place the emphasis on the development of Walloon SMEs in the health sector. To that end, the cluster unveiled at a press conference on 2 April last its strategic guidelines for the period 2010-2014, based on four main lines of actions:
  • via its innovation support activities, to continue to support excellence while satisfying itself that the technologies and products developed meet market needs and can be marketed as quickly as possible;

  • to ensure that the supply of competences matches as closely as possible the needs of companies in the health sector;

  • to pursue BioWin’s internationalisation policy, on behalf of industry and SMEs in particular;

  • to promote the creation of the technological platforms and infrastructures necessary for the development of the bio-medical sector in the Walloon Region.
BioWin has determined its strategic and operational goals on the basis of the positive evaluation of its 2006-2009 results and the economic study on health biotechnology and medical technology in Wallonia carried out by Jean-Louis Mentior (CEO of M5) and his team. This study provides in particular details of the jobs created and the economic development generated, on the basis of factual data, such as the annual accounts of 68 innovative companies that are BioWin members, for the period from 1999 to 2008.

The study’s main conclusions

An information session at the Parc Créalys and a mission in the framework of the universal exhibition in Shanghai. That is the programme developed by BioWin for the coming weeks to help our companies grasp the potential of the Chinese market.
Attracted by the Chinese market’s potential, some companies have already decided to take the plunge. Alongside big names such as GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals which has invested substantially in Shanghai and Shenzhen, several SMEs have already established contacts locally. Thus, DNAVision and BGI-HK (Beijing Genomics Institute-Hong Kong) unveiled, on 23 November last, a strategic partnership intended to strengthen their position in the area of new generation sequencing. Analis is in the process of forming a partnership with a school of Chinese traditional medicine. And it4ip wants to set up a research laboratory in Suzhou. These examples illustrate the internationalisation capacity of our companies.

BioWin intends to play a role in facilitating the initiatives of companies wanting to expand on the Chinese market. If you are looking for such growth opportunities, you will be interested in two important events we are organising in Belgium and China.

Stagesdespôles is the new platform of the five Walloon competitiveness clusters in partnership with colleges of higher education to match supply and demand between companies and students for in-company training to support technological innovation.
This new platform, which has been operational on the Internet since 31 March, was launched in the framework of the Clusters In-Company Training project which was set up in October 2009. The new platform is the fruit of the cooperation between the five Walloon competitiveness clusters (BioWin, Skywin, Wagralim, Mecatech and Logistics in Wallonia) in partnership with colleges of higher education to match supply and demand between companies and students in the framework of in-company training to support technological innovation in the French Community of Belgium.

This in-company training is intended for students nearing the end of their university or higher education studies in scientific, technological or management fields. The objective of the project is to develop a series of practical competences sector among future higher education graduates to facilitate their integration into the sectors of economic activity supported by the five clusters, namely health biotechnology, aeronautics and space, agribusiness, mechanical engineering and logistics.

In order to facilitate their integration into employment and increase the autonomy of the students receiving in-company training, new modules focusing on industrial themes (quality, project management etc.) will be added to the project on an ongoing basis. At the current time, two training programmes are available: discovering the quality system of bioindustries and best validation practices, and raising awareness about the management of technological innovation projects.

  Belgian Breakfast meeting at the BIO convention in Chicago
 Belgium will be present at the BIO conference in Chicago (3-6 May), an international convention which brings together all key biology and biotechnology stakeholders. The Walloon wing of the delegation will be located on stand 4805 of the Belgian pavilion.

Alongside the convention, the three regions have invited international companies to a Belgian Breakfast Meeting. On 4 May, alongside a Belgian delegation composed of around twenty Walloon organisations and companies, the three main French-language universities and representatives of the Federal government and the Walloon research administration, key personalities will address the meeting to explain why global companies are investing in the biotechnology sector in Belgium.

In the evening of 4 May, the Belgian Café evening, which had attracted more than 800 people last year, will be held in the bar where Buddy Guy, a big name in the blues world, will delight blues lovers. A presence will also be assured at the convention.

  FlandersBio invites you to its annual convention
 This convention will be held at the ICC Ghent on 20 May next. On the theme “Collaboration, Driving Innovation Forward”, the presentations will focus on innovations in the area of medicine and health, but also on plant and industrial biotechnology companies.

BioWin will make a presentation in the framework of the Bio-ExTRAKT programme put in place by FlandersBio to bring together, via networking activities, companies and organisations from Flanders’ neighbouring biotechnological regions.

  Rendezvous in Bangalore with the AWEX
 Join the Awex group of companies and research centres which will participate on 2-4 June next in the Bangalore India Bio 2010 conference, the leading Indian event in the biotechnology sector.

A not-to-be missed networking opportunity, since it should be borne in mind that the Indian biotechnology sector is the third largest in Asia, with estimated annual growth of 30% while the sector’s revenues are expected to reach 5 billion US dollars in 2010. At the same time, India recognises the need for international cooperation to ensure that the biotechnology sector continues to grow.

For more information and to take advantage of very attractive participation terms, contact Catherine Collet, Project Manager Asia Pacific Export & Investment at AWEX (c.collet@awex.be).(c.collet@awex.be).
