Five projects are in the running for labelling by the Walloon Government, including two that come under the new topic of “information and communication technologies applied to human health”.
Following the 26 letters of intent sent to BioWin, no less than 15 full projects have been submitted. These figures are a testament to the great interest provoked by the Biowin calls for projects, and to the capacity of the Walloon economic fabric for producing consortia for high-quality projects.

Made up of 12 people from the academic world, SMEs and major companies, the BioWin international jury possesses all the R&D expertise required for an evaluation process in conformity with the established procedures.

The addition of the new topic is also notable for having enabled the inclusion of new contributors and projects in the Walloon R&D activities likely to be supported by BioWin. The adoption by the living sciences of information and communication technology (ICT) is set to profoundly modify medical practices, whether in terms of the implementation of therapeutic approaches, the organisation of hospitalisation, or relations between patients and medical staff. It will also have an impact on the quality and speed of care provided to patients.

Appointment of a new BioWin Asia international director, two-way visits by delegations, participation of BioWin in BIO China next October... The Chinese-Walloon partnership initiated last year is hotting up.
On 25 June 2010, BioWin signed a partnership agreement with the SBIA (Shanghai Biopharmaceutical Industry Association) for an initial two-year period. This accord should help to stimulate commercial exchanges between contributors from BioWin and from the SBIA, facilitate access to the Chinese market for Walloon SMEs and vice versa, and encourage inter-university exchanges involving French-speaking Belgian doctoral and post-doctoral fellows and their Chinese counterparts. Since its signing, this Chinese-Walloon partnership has slipped into cruising speed, with Walloon SMEs strengthening their commercial links and relations with partners, and Chinese research centres having the opportunity to make new contacts.

Launched on 14 February this year, BioWin's BioPharE project has been structured around four new training programmes.
The aim of this project is to ensure the strategic monitoring of the training and skills development programmes offered by the different operators so that it matches the requirements of the stakeholders from the Wallonia's Health Biotech sector (directors and decision-makers, managers and staff, students and doctoral fellows, jobseekers). Serving as an interface between supply and demand, BioPharE's success is therefore to a great extent dependent on the collaborative will of the different parties involved.

On account of its strategic vision, the team in charge of BioPharE has been entrusted with the structuring and enrichment of the provision in order to offer suitable programmes that will be placed on a Web platform to be launched by the end of the year. In this way, the BioPharE team intends to create added value for all the parties concerned.

The new operator training programmes will be put together in special collaboration with the industrial members (large companies and SMEs). Currently, four new programmes are already available: Strategio, Transverse, Focus and Cap Bio.

Via its relations with academic circles, the BioPharE team will also eventually be able to help match the course syllabi delivered at the universities and colleges with the skills requirements of the competitive cluster's member companies.

  Biological weapons at Egmont Palace

On 20 June, the issue of biological weapons will be debated at Egmont Palace during a seminar organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the BBP (Belgian Biosafety Professionals) association.

The aim is to explore means of controlling aspects of dual use in life sciences laboratories, both from the government's point of view and that of the industry concerned. This seminar should also appeal to vaccine producers and to research laboratories using pathogenic agents or certain special technologies linked to nanobiotechnology or synthetic biology.
